Disclosure Is a Return-Prevention Tool

Use specific wording and evidence so the buyer understands the exact trade-off before paying.

Your goal

Write defect and repair disclosures that reduce misunderstanding without scaring away good buyers.

When to use

Use in every electronics listing and receipt where a material condition fact exists.

Why this matters

Returns often happen because the buyer's expectation does not match the item they receive.

The lesson

Disclosure should answer: what is the issue, what did you test, and how does the item behave in normal use? Avoid vague reassurance like 'small issue, doesn't affect anything.' If there is a visible crease, say where it is, show it, and state exactly what testing showed. If battery health is 82%, state it. If a screen was replaced, disclose what you know. Do not overstate certainty. 'No known issues after testing' is more defensible than 'perfect.' If you did not test a function, do not imply that you did. Use photos as evidence. A direct photo of the defect often builds more trust than trying to minimize it in words. Receipts or transaction records can preserve important condition facts and included accessories. This protects both sides because the buyer's expectation is documented.

Worked example

Instead of 'tiny crease, no problem,' write: 'Visible crease on the right side of the display, shown in photos 5–6. Touch worked across the full screen during testing and normal apps operated correctly. Price reflects the visible defect.'

Practical checklist

  • Issue named
  • Location described
  • Function tested
  • Photo included
  • Repair history disclosed
  • Accessory omissions disclosed
  • No unsupported guarantees

Common mistakes

  • Using vague 'doesn't matter' wording
  • Claiming perfection
  • Hiding a defect photographically
  • Failing to preserve sale-time disclosure

Key takeaways

  • Specific disclosure creates trust
  • Evidence reduces disputes
  • Do not promise what you did not test
Put this into practice

Rewrite three defect descriptions using issue + location + tested behavior + photo reference.
